On the road again

Taking a cue from a certain cousin, and I quote, "one adventure always leads to another," I give you:  A summer adventure by list, reproduced faithfully, if somewhat more legibly - from my notebook, with visual aids and post-adventure commentary added:

Mon. (8/15/11)    Lander, WY / Sinks Canyon
                                SW of Lander on SH 131 - 3 campgrounds as you go up canyon, 3rd is close to approach trails -free camprgound 1/2 mi. up canyon after geology camp
(Dolomite above, I think. Also sandstone, limestone, granite and gypsum. And the sink.)

Tues., Wed.    Tetons / Yellowstone


Thurs.    Craters of the Moon, ID
(2000 year old volcanic pahoehoe lava)


Fri.    Smith Rock, OR
            Hwy 97 N. from Bend to Terrebonne  L. on 17th st., R. on Wilcox ave., L. on crooked river dr.    Smith Bivy next to park, look for sign.    BLM  Skull Holllow/Grasslands  - no water

A meal to remember

I started thinking about favorite foods in response to a question, and ended up writing this list of favorite foods/meals/drinks/tid-bits. Almost all of them are memorable not strictly, or maybe not at all, for culinary value, but instead for the time, the place, the company, the experience of which their consumption was a part. That is to say that each of these "meals" has a story...

1. Sourdough flapjacks on the woodburning stove
2. "crap"
3. Wormy apples from the climbing trees - good eating and equally good for batting practice
4. 2 cans worth of whipped cream on paper plates in the kitchen on 17th st., 3rd grade, Thanksgiving
5. August chokecherries
6. Dad's basement wine (just a taste)
7. Sopa"r"pillas during posadas
8. Cuba libres, New Year's Eve, 2004ish
9. Dinty Moore beef stew on the camp stove
10. 3 inch thick porkchop in raspberry sauce, Peak-to-Peak
11. Salmon in white wine
12. Iguana on a spit
13. Espresso with honey, camp 4,
14. Bottle of cognac in C's basement
15. E&J on the front porch, 54th st.
16. Maté in the middle of the night jungle
17. Stale tortillas fried in pig fat
18. tuna on saltines, many days in a row (it was all we had left)
19. fish stew, jamaican
20. green tea for morning visits
21. entire box of wheat thins, Mom's kitchen
22. pizza in Juchitan
23. refried bean pizza in San Diego
24. midnight cookies
25. 2am tacos
26. graham cracker & wedding cake frosting cookies
27. bacon, pregnant
28. 3 whole boxes of Manuel's oreos
29. dried apples & gov't cheese
